Some collections begin with a moodboard. This one began with a packet of sunflower seeds.

Meet Polly-Anna Webster, better known as Pin It Polly, the Brighton textiles student whose joyful ideas grew from a packet of sunflower seeds into five colourful pieces.

Last summer, Polly asked her housemates to plant them with her. Before long, their rooftop had become a garden of hand painted pots, watering cans, blooming flowers and new shoots heading off in every direction.

That feeling of making something with your own hands, then watching it grow, became the heart of Polly’s print designs.

“Last summer, I bought some sunflower seeds and asked my housemates to plant them with me. This spiralled joyfully into the start of my rooftop garden, hand painted pots, watering cans, blooming flowers. Everyday, I would come home to something sprouting in a new direction.”

And that is exactly what came through in her designs. The flowers, the colour, the hand drawn details. Polly-Anna’s rooftop garden is all over the collection.

“With my hands I was able to create this space of colour, growth, and beauty. Now, through my print designs, I’m able to share that joy with everyone.”

We invited 12 of Brighton University’s textiles students and challenged them to turn one creative brief into a mini collection. When the students came into our office, they brought drawings, moodboards and beautiful printed, woven and knitted pieces. Every project had its own magic, and choosing a winner was anything but easy.

But Polly’s joyful, personality packed designs stayed with us.

Polly-Anna returned for a paid day with our team, helping turn her ideas from sketches into production ready pieces. Watching the collection come to life has been something really special.

The result is five pieces filled with the colour and energy of Polly’s rooftop garden: Original dungarees, a Benny tee, an Alva pencil case, an Emery laptop case and a Catalina oversized tote.

There is something quite wonderful about seeing an idea travel all that way. From a few sunflower seeds on a rooftop to a collection that can head out into the world with you.
